New scene for "Borscht". Single screen.
Genuine NES graphics.

Every pixel artist is doing it, and i'm not one to skip out on a fun fad.
Some of my stuff through that upscaler everyone's tweeting about. Guess i can't add my usual catchphrase "Genuine NES graphics" anymore, huh.

I call this memepiece "the pixel artists' plight"

@HEYYYDON 1: I often begin with a few basic single color tiles to lay out a rough composition of the scene. Then chisel it out, taking turns between creating a new tile and seeing if one i've already made fits.
Tile based GFX editing is as much or more mosaics and carving as it is drawing
@f5kn 2: A much more stable, but artistically more limited method, is to just set the R + G emphasis bits. This creates a sunrise/sunset shift of the whole palette towards tan and yellow.
Emulators generally get this wrong, though. So beware!
@0000jordan 3: references are good. While i watched the german tv series "dark", about teens in a small town around a neuclear power plant, they did this scene establishment to say that it was getting late, and i just thought the colours were lovely. that inspired the choices for this scene:
@ThKasparrr (1/2) It really depends on the tool. With NESST or NEXXT, palette management is easy and i can design and experiment as i go. I can switch between sets easily and see the result directly without destructing anything.
Sometimes i draw a rough sketch to try it out
