The @GOVUK announced an export ban on 120 drawings of animals by artist Joseph Wolf. Arts & Heritage Minister, Lord Stephen Parkinson, commented: “I sincerely hope a buyer comes forward to save these for the nation.” The drawings are valued at £119,700.

@MinistereCC announced the authentication of 3 shipwrecks from a fleet of Louis XIV that was wiped out during the Battle of La Hougue in 1692. The ships were found in the 1990s off the coast of the English Channel. Researchers are seeking funding to continue their work.

French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard died #OTD in 1806
A pupil under François Boucher & Jean-Siméon Chardin, Fragonard painted in a Rococo style for years. His 1765 painting “Coresus and Callirhoë” won him entry into the Académie Royale. He later worked in establishing museums.

In the 18th-c the Grand Tour & archeological discoveries in Italy fueled the reemergence of capricci (capriccio), a genre painting featuring fantastical architectural cityscapes. This work by Jean Mariège, active in Lyon from 1721-1728, attests to the popularity of the genre.

Sadly French illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempé has died at age 89.

Sempé co-created "Le Petit Nicolas" children’s books & illustrated more covers for the @NewYorker than any other artist.

According to Orhan Pamuk "Sempé is France. Everything is there: irony & tenderness."

British Painter Laura Knight was born #OTD, 1877.
In 1939, Knight was asked to create recruitment posters for the Women’s Land Army. She later famously depicted the Nuremberg Trial. She was also known for intimate portraits, often of marginalized people.

“LE TRE PIETÀ DI MICHELANGELO: No One Thinks of How much Blood it Costs” at Florence’s Museo dell’Opera del Duomo @OperaDuomoFi has been extended until Oct. 3. The original “Bandini Pietà” is shown alongside plaster casts of the “Vatican Pietà” and the “Pietà Rondanini”.

American Realist artist Harvey Dinnerstein has sadly died at 94. Along with his friend Burt Silverman, he depicted the trial & other events surrounding the Montgomery bus boycott in 1956. Dinnerstein portrayed Rosa Parks holding a bible. Most recently he depicted the pandemic.
