This week, take a deep dive into Italy’s #Quattrocento (1400-1499), a period that beheld new developments in art and architecture due to an increased interest in classical antiquity, economic change, technical innovation, and a greater value placed on the study of the human body.
#OTD in 1900, Yves Tanguy was born.
It was after seeing Giorgio de Chirico’s work in 1923 that #Tanguy became a painter. Henceforth, despite no formal training, he became an integral part of the #Surrealist movement with his nonrepresentative, limited palette landscapes.
#OTD in 1896 André Masson was born.
Foraying into Cubism early in his career, he soon joined the Surrealists, working alongside Mirò and Dubuffet. Later in his life, his experimentation with media, and his ‘automatic’ drawing style, became strong influences for #JacksonPollock.
Fragonard’s “Les Hasards heureux de l’escarpolette” presents the femme fatale of the 18th century, balanced coquettishly upon a swing amidst a love triangle.
Restoration work now reveals that her husband, who pushes the swing, is totally unaware of his male rival! #rococo
#OTD in 1928, Helen #Frankenthaler was born.
One of the great American artists of the 20th century, she played a central role in the transition between Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, especially through her invention of the stoak-stain technique. #WomensArt
#OTD in 1884, Zinaida Serebriakova was born.
The Russian artist excelled in her paintings on Russian rural life, demonstrating an acute awareness of the beautify of the Russian land and its working people. #WomensArt
Take an #artbreak with Wiliiam Scott’s “Young Girl in Red” (1938-1939).
Though the British artist would turn to #AbstractExpressionism after WWII, this painting still displays his penchant for Figurative art.
It will be sold by @thierrylannon tomorrow: €30,000/40,000.
The manuscript for Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” will be exhibited by @madparis from February to June. Written during WWII while he was on exile in the US, it was sold to the @MorganLibrary in 1968. This is the first time it has left the country since!
To celebrate Foujita’s birthday, take an #artbreak:
“Maternity” (1951) by Foujita will be sold by @DE_BAECQUE in Lyon on Monday. His series on maternal subjects illustrate his fervent Catholic faith, rendered in his own Japanese ink techniques.
#OTD in 1898, René #Maigritte was born.
The Belgian #Surrealist artist placed familiar objects in unfamiliar scenarios, creating disturbing strange, and often witty images that posed questions about the nature of reality and illusion.
