American painter and etcher John Sloan was born #OTD in 1871 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. A member of the Socialist Party and a central figure in the Ashcan school, he helped organize the Exhibition of Independent Artists and exhibited in the 1913 Armory show.

Paul Hippolyte Delaroche was born #OTD in 1797, in Paris. Trained by academic painter Antoine-Jean Gros, he first exhibited at the Salon in 1822. He went on to become one of the most popular French painters of the early 19th century.
Painter and art restorer Pavel Korin was born #OTD in 1892 in Palekh, Russia. Korin had a successful career as a portrait painter and mosaic creator in the former Soviet Union. On his death in 1967, his home was turned into a museum—his widow continued to live there for 25 years.
A #Fragonard painting, lost for 200 years, has been purchased by a French collector for €7.68M in Epernay, sold by Enchères Champagne. Estimated at €1.5/2M, Jean-Honoré Fragonard's "A Philosopher Reading” had been rediscovered during an inventory of an estate in the Marne.
