Photos: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Isao Takahata's final masterpiece just might be his greatest achievement, certainly his most poignant and reflective. I can't think of a better animated film to arrive since this one.

I think It Chapter 2 would have been a lot better if it starred Krusty the Clown. Also, if it was about six hours shorter and wasn't constantly ripping off Stranger Things.

Here are some screenshots from Ep1 of Heidi, Girl of the Alps. All of these shots have been "riffed" or quoted in other or anime. Can you spot these ones? Let's test your Trivia skills, kids!

Electrocop (1989, Epyx for Lynx). Spectacular showpiece for Lynx handheld, featuring scaling sprites and intricate 3D level designs. Very tough & challenging, probably a bit much for modern gamers (pen & paper are required). Just about my favorite Lynx title.

Tony Mottola, A Latin Love-In (1967). Hardly anybody knows this LP exists, but it’s one of my absolute favorite jazz/bossa nova albums, wonderfully melodic and relaxing. Audio quality is sublime, especially w/my Denon DL-103R.

You can find a copy for under $5. Check it out.

Illustrated pages from the official booklet for Hayao 2006 Museum short film, Hoshi o Katti Hi, "The Day I Bought a Star." Its visual style is very similar to Howl's Moving Castle, looks wonderfully lush in color and detail.

Yadosagashi (Looking For a Home), Hayao Miyazaki's 2006 Museum short film. Its visual style is similar to Ponyo and the soundtrack is entirely composed of human-voiced audio effects. The girl, of course, resembles Pippi Longstockings with her red pigtails.

Storyboard illustrations by Hayao Miyazaki for his 1980 Mononoke Hime project. Unable to secure funding, he published his work as an illustrated book, which was later published in the West. This version of Mononoke is radically different from the 1997 movie of the same name.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Terence Dicks, prolific Doctor Who writer and author of most of the series’ nevelizations. My love of the series was mostly due to the books, where one’s imagination wasn’t limited by tiny budgets & cheap f/x.

Wish I still had my books!
