More nightmarish than “The Exorcist”. More bloody than “The Texas chainsaw massacre.” More disturbing than “Zombie Flesh Eaters!”

“Watership Down” is coming to 4K UHD courtesy of the BFI.

The horror!

Oh boy, how could I have forgotten this gem from 1973…

“Zardoz!”

There was definitely something in the air that year.

The book is nearing completion (250+ illustrated pages of prose).

Think Guillermo del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone” in terms of tone - youthful cast navigating adult political/social upheaval. A gritty and topical fantastical drama.

Feel free to DM me with any suggestions.

Here’s a bad review for “Don’t Look Now” that I recently read in a 1973 issue of respected genre bible “Cinefantastique.”

‘…the genre can do without filmmakers who value intellectual process over dramatic reality… Artists have dragged popular art into holes like this before…’

Along with films like “Alice” and “Little Ottik”, Svankmajer creates truly experimental handcrafted dream-state cinema out of little.

You can still see beautiful practical live puppet shows in places such as Salzburg’s Marionette Theatre, although perhaps not as grotesque. ;)

The past returns to haunt the present (in so many ways)…

‘I’m the new Thatcher!’
‘No, I’m channeling the new Thatcher!’
‘Vote for me… I’m the economic Thatcher!’

So many ‘Thatchers’ for Party members to choose from, must be so confusing!

Start your day with some art.

Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, known by the pseudonym of J. J. Grandville (1803-1847). ‘Grandville’ was a French political cartoon satirist, his work specialised in human to animal metamorphosis via social/class observations.

Out of context drawings from my nearing completion book - “The Devil of Bleaktop” aka “Coal Face.”

A demon appears before a divided and beleaguered mining community in the form of a dragon offering salvation and victory. But at what cost?

I like this extract of a review of “Der Student Von Prag” from 1926 that even back then bemoans the then trend for remaking ‘old’ films.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

From Jonathan Rigby’s hefty marvellous tome - “Euro Gothic.”

Not my photos but… The producers of Dr Who doing what 2000AD productions seem so far incapable of doing by putting accurate realised versions of the comic book creations of Pat Mills/Dave Gibbons on screen.

Maybe one day… Nemesis the Warlock/ABC Warriors ?
