So the joke with the DB creature is that it takes this metaphorical name literally, depicting it as a phoenix-like legendary bird that lives in a volcano and eats fire. Coincidentally or not, there’s a DQ monster based on the same idea (localized as “Firebird” or “Phoenix”)

Episodes 73 and 74 feature a reboot of the Great Saiyaman film franchise (begun by Director Red about six years ago), now starring film sensation Barry Kahn (last seen being impersonated by Buu). Barry is taken over by an alien and fights Gohan, just as Toriyama planned all along

I’ll also be continuing my OG Kinnikuman read-through with the Dream Tag and Scramble for the Throne arcs in…um…January 2022. By then I’ll have a bit more free time to give these the thorough treatment they deserve.

Kinnikuman volume 76 also comes out next week. It’s always nice seeing Big Body and Super Phoenix all buddy buddy.

In short: the anime splits the main action over four days and three trips to the future to fight Black (plus Black’s brief trip into the present), while the manga’s main action takes place over three days and only two time trips to battle Black (who never travels to the present).

This is where things get tricky. Chapter 26 on its own gives the impression that Trunks and Mai leave 2 days after Future Zeno is retrieved (so Day 6), while the vol.5 bonus comic is set “several days” after the battle with Zamasu, and shows Trunks resolving to leave in 2-3 days.

With that, Goku and Vegeta accompany Trunks back to his future world to confront Goku Black. In both the DBS manga and anime, this occurs on the day after Trunks’ arrival, but from there the two versions’ timelines increasingly diverge (so to speak)

Trunks explains about the crappiness of his future world to (present day) Gohan. Things don’t seem quite so bad in the Trunks TV special, with amusement parks still operating and whatnot, so apparently the situation really deteriorates in the few years after Gohan’s death.

There’s even a chapter in color too.

Belatedly realizing what Fenbren reminds me of. Although Fenbren came first of course (and Bisharp seems more inspired by Samurai and/or Kamen Rider)
