On the less mystical side, it’s during his training with Kami and Popo that Goku begins wearing weighted clothes, including the boots and blue undershirt that form his trademark outfit as an adult (fan artists take note: kid Goku has slipper-style shoes and no undershirt)
Then in the Android arc, we retroactively learn that kid Goku tried out the time chamber during this period, only to crack up after about a month inside (so 2 hours in outside time). But it’s thanks to this that Goku knows of the room and suggests using it for the androids/Cell.
This factoid about the moon’s restoration and the final fate of Goku’s tail is first mentioned early on in the 23rd TB, and explains why the moon is around again for Piccolo to blow up in the Saiyan arc after Roshi destroys it the first time around at the 21st TB.
The upshot to this is that Piccolo Junior’s birthday is May 9th, thus making him the only character to have a birthday specified in the series itself. Well, him and Drum. And the Cell Juniors, I guess (though the date of the Cell Games is variable, as we’ll see)
This is it: May 9th. An actual date stated in the series! The joke here is that May 9th=5 9=Go Ku according to the versatile rules of Japanese number punning, which is why this date is also designated as Goku Day, thus leading to a rather overcrowded holiday for fans.
Despite being within earshot of Piccolo’s lengthy speech to his son, Goku doesn’t notice any of this. Instead, his concern is to revive everyone killed by Piccolo and co. But to do that, he’ll have to get Shenlong fixed first, and that means going right to the top.
Goku bravely and/or illogically gulps down the poison and spends six hours in agony before the power unlock kicks in, at which point the sun is rising (so presumably he started around midnight). During this same night, Tenshinhan perfects the Mafuba. May 9th looks to be a big day
Thanks to Shenlong, Piccolo becomes young(ish). With that done, he kills the dragon to be on the safe side. Meanwhile, Kami looks down on all of this carnage and furrows his brow pensively (I assume). Gee whiz, if there were only some way to stop Piccolo without killing him...
Roshi tries to seal Piccolo up with the Mafuba, but messes it up and dies (he’ll be a zillion times better at this technique by the time Super rolls around). Chiaotzu doesn’t last much longer (clearly he’s jealous of Kuririn getting a head start in the death count championship)
(And in case you’re wondering about their plan to revive everyone next year: the limitation of only being able to revive those who have died within a year is only mentioned in regards to the super high numbers of kills racked up by the Saiyans or Freeza)
