Actually, Vegeta and Nappa don’t give a crap about Raditz, but they’re real intrigued about these “dragon balls” Piccolo mentioned. They take off for Earth without bothering to get Freeza’s permission. Freeza’s upset…for a bit. But those dragon balls sure do sound nice…
Ultimately though it’s the Goku/Piccolo tag-team that seals the deal, as Goku sacrifices himself so that Piccolo can nail Raditz with his fancy new drill beam attack. But Raditz has some bad news: Vegeta and Nappa will be arriving in a year (more or less) to avenge him!
Raditz takes Gohan hostage to ensure Goku’s compliance, but this doubly backfires: first by allowing Goku and Piccolo to track him down via the DB in Gohan’s hat (their ki-sensing skills apparently still suck) and second by putting him on the receiving end of Gohan’s hidden power
Eventually, the Saiyans find a planet that looks like it will fetch a good price, but it might be a bit tough for just the three of them. If only Sunchoke and Fiddlehead were still around! And Tarble is clearly worthless. But wait…didn’t Raditz have a younger brother too?
(Vegeta’s casual knowledge of the truth at this early date doesn’t quite seem to match his reaction when Dodoria tells him the news, but that’s filler for you. Anyway, I’d forgotten how long this flashback is. It’s like a quarter of DBZ ep.104!)
(Viz messes this up by also describing people as having “forgotten” Goku’s efforts against the Saiyans and Freeza, when in Japanese it says they simply never knew about it. And for the record, the TV crews filming Nappa/Vegeta were filler too)
Sadly, the once prominent comic book author and illustrator Akira Toriyama (of Dr. Slump fame) has by now fallen into poverty, his works long forgotten. Or so it is in one timeline. Can the future be changed? Only time will tell!
(Notably, Mashirito’s ultimate fate is first shown during this trip into the future, shortly before it comes to pass in Slump’s present day during the Strongest in the World tournament arc)
Another perennial Super favorite: Gohan and Goten were apparently conceived without any kissing on Goku and Chi Chi’s part. This is a bit like Senbei in Dr. Slump, still ignorant of the birds and bees despite conceiving a son, although this probably fits Slump’s tone a lot better
As the world’s first Saiyan/Earthling hybrid, Gohan sports a tail (he seems to be the odd man out in that regard, but more on this way later). Thankfully, Goku and Chi Chi aren’t big on nighttime stargazing.
