Also, DAYUM that is some SWEET SWEET 2D goodness! Regardless of how this thing turns out, I’d say it’ll be worth it just for seeing this kind of animation prominently in a big feature film again.
Godzilla Vs Kong-A-Thon [43/45]
Godzilla: City On the Edge of Battle (2018):
An even more underwhelming follow up to the last movie. It starts off promising but nosedives hard into tedium and pretension. Ultimately it feels like a complete waste of time.
Score: 1.5/10
Godzilla Vs Kong-A-Thon [40/45]
Shin Godzilla (2016):
A bold, striking thriller that reinvents the Big-G in novel yet spectacular fashion. Potent political commentary mixed with engrossing scifi weirdness. The best, most unique Godzilla film since the original.
Score: 8.5-9/10
The companion drawing here was inspired by Matt Frank’s work on IDW’s Godzilla comic, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. Specifically, I drew inspiration from these covers here.
Godzilla Vs Kong-A-Thon [32/45]
Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999): A decent if unremarkable start to the third Godzilla series. It not exactly groundbreaking, but it’s still entertaining enough. After Godzilla 1998’s failure, it’s a serviceable palette cleanser.
Score: 6.3/10
Seems like 1998 was an abysmal year for giant monster movies, wasn't it?
Godzilla Vs Kong-A-Thon [31/45]
The Mighty Kong (1998): A shameless bastardization of a classic . It adapts the original story into a dumbed-down kidified musical with shoddy animation, awful pacing and miscast voice talent. The worst movie to bear the Kong name.
Score: 0/10
Okay, it’s 4:15 in the morning right now and now that I’m finished with my Godzilla ‘98 review, I’m going to bed.
After work tomorrow, I’ll be covering a movie that makes Godzilla ‘98 look like a masterpiece: The Mighty Kong.
Please excuse me while I cry myself to sleep now.
A couple more kaiju redesigns, this time for Titanosaurus and Behemoth.
I’m planning on featuring these in a shared kaiju universe storyline I’ve been starting to develop recently.
Godzilla Vs Kong-A-Thon [25/45]
Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (1991): A weird, wild, engrossing thrill ride. While it’s time travel plot is very nonsensical, the film offers some great monster fights, interesting characters and a closer look into Godzilla’s origins.
Score: 7.3/10
