Ambergris has been called the treasure of the sea & floating gold, though its source remained a mystery for centuries. Theories proposed included hardened sea foam & the droppings of large birds, before discovering it was the regurgitated matter of sperm whales.

The river Styx forms the boundary between the earth & the Underworld, with ferryman Charon transporting the souls of the newly dead across the river to the world below. Some believed the Styx had miraculous powers & bathing in it made one invulnerable.

Occultist & self-declared spirit medium, Edward Kelley was rumoured to have been pilloried in Lancaster for forgery or counterfeiting & both ears were supposedly cropped. He notedly wore a cap to hide this disfigurement, though his hair/beard seems to do the job.

In 1818, John Cleves Symmes Jr proposed to mount an expedition to the North Pole, where he was sure they could locate an aperture to gain access to the inner Earth, believing that its interior would be "stocked with thrifty vegetables & animals if not men".

Edmund Halley theorised (in 1692) that Earth is a series of nested, spherical shells, spinning in different directions, all surrounding a central core. He also posited that the space between each shell may have had luminous atmospheres capable of supporting life.

Of all the traits ascribed to salamanders, the ones relating to fire are most prominent, & likely originate due to many species of salamander hibernating under rotting logs, so when wood was put on the fire, the creatures 'mysteriously' appeared from the flames.
