A lovely sunny walk along the canal this morning to see Paula Rego: The Forgotten @VictoriaMIro

With fairy tales fashionable among Parisian aristocrats, Mother Goose Tales (1697) supported Perrault's view that nobility was superior to peasantry. Many stories also reflected Catholic beliefs, eg purification from sin & repentance before re-entering society. #WyrdWednesday
Perrault used images familiar to him, eg the Chateau Ussé for The Sleeping Beauty, & the Marquis of the Château d'Oiron as the Marquis de Carabas in Puss in Boots. He also ornamented his folktales with details, asides & subtext drawn from the world of fashion. #WyrdWednesday
Carmenta's cult was closely connected with women. In order to avoid breach births, altars were set up in Rome to the 'two Carmentes', of whom one is called Postverta (Backward) & the other Prorsa (Forward) in reference to an 'abnormal' foot first breech birth of a child.
Momotarō was born from a giant peach, found floating down a river by a childless woman washing clothes. She & her husband discovered him while trying to open the peach to eat it, which prompted the child to explain he'd been bestowed by the gods to be their son. #FolkloreThursday
