On the winter solstice, a white female animal (usually a reindeer) was sacrificed in honour of the Scandinavian goddess Beiwe, who travelled through the night sky in a structure made of reindeer bones to bring back the greenery on which these creatures fed. #MythologyMonday
Frau Holle appears in many different forms in Scandinavian mythology and legend. She is associated with both the evergreen plants of the Yule season, and with snowfall, which is said to be Frau Holle shaking out her feathery mattresses. #FaustianFriday
This golden headdress & pair of ear plates (left) in the Peruvian exhibition @britishmuseum instantly caused me to think of Ned Kelly. The pieces in this show are stunning, and hard to believe most of them - including these objects - are over 2000 years old.
A yuki-onna only appears on snowy nights. This inhuman entity has blue lips, black & very long hair, & pale (often transparent) skin. She can be very beautiful with the ability to shapeshift into fog or snow, floating above it, she leaves no tracks. #FolkloreThursday
