In 1888 many grim grimy chimney sweeps were grimly shocked on London’s rooftops by “Springheeled Jumping Jack”, the supernatural flasher, who asked if they were feeling “...as lucky as lucky could be?” & if so, would they care to share by giving him a kiss & rubbing off the soot?

@Barr0ca @thehispanist I’ve often wondered about this. I think it’s simply because many folks, esp. in the US, don’t know about the old traditions of guising etc & just think of dressing up in a costume, rather than what type of guise was worn & just as importantly, why people wore costumes & masks etc
