Spanish retreat after an attack on a convoy.

Employing hit-and-run tactics, Spanish & Portuguese Guerillas were able to cause massive disruption, attacking large convoys.

With a variety of clothing along with muskets, carbines & other arms that were typical.

The death of Capt Cadoux 95th Rifles at Vera.

Cadoux had led 100 men in a brave defence against a Division of attacking French.

Calls for support were ignored & French were mown down on the bridge.

The fighting was in heavy rain & only when they fell back was Cadoux killed.

8 Jan 1812, Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army undertook the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo.

The fortress-town fell swiftly, in only 11 days.

Troops battled with the weather, including icy rivers & freezing nights as well as the walls defended by est 1,800 French soldiers.

The 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot standing firm against the French attack at the Battle of Vimeiro on 21 August 1808, during the 1st invasion of Portugal.

At Vimerio Wellesley chose ridges near the coast to successfully defend.

As the Spanish Cavalry run down the French infantry, they are cheered on by the British line infantry (to the right).

Portuguese Caçadores.

During the Peninsular War, the Portuguese Caçadores were known for their expertise at marksmanship. Once they Wellesley’s famous Peninsula Light Division.

Armed with Rifles & clad in brown they were adapt skirmishers.

Battle of Campo Maior, 25th March 1811.

The British & Allied Cavalry overwhelmed a large force of French cavalry capturing a train of artillery, some of which was later recovered.

Many French dragoons were broken & their commanding officer, General Chamorin, was killed.
