An advancing Division of French troops were held up by 2 Companies (only 100 men) of the 95th Rifles, across a narrow bridge.
Commanded by Captain Cadoux, who requests for support were denied, they held out overnight.
The storming of San Sebastian took place #OnThisDay 31 August 1813. Thomas Graham's forces of British & Portuguese troops ran from trenches & into the breach. It led to the Peninsular War reaching the Pyrenees & France.
The city was sacked despite officer's attempts to stop it.

The 2nd (Royal North British) Dragoons, (then their offical name), were part of the heavy cavalry charge of the Union & Household Brigades that smashed D'Erlons Corps & captured 2 Imperial Eagles.
The 71st Highland Light Infantry skirmishing in a Peninsular village.
From 1810-1814 the 71st received over 2,500 men as replacements but never fielded more than 600 in the field, such was the virtually continuous skirmishing that took place.
#OnThisDay 24th Aug 1814 British troops set the White House ablaze as they sack Washington D.C. thought to be retaliation for the Americans burning York, Canada, the year before.

At the Battle of Barrosa 1811, the 87th Regt captured the 8eme Eagle.
The Eagle was grabbed by Ensign Keogh, who was shot.
In the fight, 7 French troops were killed, before Sergeant Patrick Masterson scooped it up & shouted "By Jaysus, Boys! I have the cuckoo!" 🦅
Fought #OnThisDay 27 Feb 1814 the Battle of Orthez, Wellington defeated Marshal Soult.
After several assaults, the French were driven back from their defensive positions.
The French withdrawal became a scramble for safety and many French soldiers became prisoners.
