Despite differences in tone, it’s clear that Wing is in conversation with 0079. Ikeda purposely adopted its archetypes and motifs—adolescent pilots, a masked and mysterious villain, tensions between Earth and Space—so they could be employed in unexpected ways.

Fun fact: The decision to feature the G-Armor in First #Gundam was a contentious one. Clover, a major sponsor of the show (and a now-defunct toy company), pressured Sunrise to include more and flashier mechs to boost toy sales.

The animation featured in Episode 22 of Mobile Suit #Gundam captures the hair-raising stakes of the final scene, as the White Base, spewing smoke and flame, makes a stand, before descending to Earth. As per usual, some truly excellent shot composition.
