War dead commemorated by ice installation. In 2014, more than 5,000 figures were set around Chamberlain Square, Birmingham and left to melt. The Monument was created by Brazilian sculptor Nele Azevedo. She said: "It takes into account the history of the defeated, the anonymous."

Kay Nielsen worked with the Walt Disney Company for 4 years creating concept art that lead to the further development of many Disney films. His work was used in "Fantasia". Sadly, Kay Nielsen died a very poor man & his work was left in the shadows till many years later.

Yes, indeed. The smiling peasants and (even creepier) the smiling children of Stalinist and Maoist kitsch art. Always a good idea to set the genocide statistics for Stalin and Mao beneath such pictures.

Alien Art. I just found a homage to "Isle of the Dead" - the painting by Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901), in Ridley Scott's movie "Alien Covenant". Scott's inspiration may have come from H.R. Giger's "Homage to Böcklin" (1977). Giger created the template look for all Alien films.

Un-used Star Wars image. This image was concept art by Ralph McQuarrie for Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes back. It depicts an egg-laying alien creature on Dagobah, the planet where Yoda went into exile. It never made it past the drawing board. Amazing nonetheless

Amazing that this Max Ernst painting was the film poster for THE BIRDS by Alfred Hitchcock. The image comes from the film release in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. Here's the original painting " Dressing up the Bride" and the 1952 American film poster for comparison.

Fizzles. In 1976 Jasper Johns illustrated an edition of a book by Samuel Beckett. It's called Foirades (or Fizzles)
The "fizzles" are 8 short prose pieces that explore determinism & fate. It is considered one of the greatest artist's books of the 2nd half of the 20th century.
