Pt. 4. Extraordinary Vintage book jackets for George Orwell's 1984. The german version attempted to sell it as sexy. The U.S version sold it as "A starling view of life in 1984... Forbidden Love...Fear...Betrayal." Curiously off-message.

While dying of tuberculosis George Orwell went to a remote Scottish house to write what he knew would be his final book: 1984. He submitted the manuscript in mid-1949, and died, on this day, January 21st, in 1950, aged 46. 1984 remains a warning.

Part 4. The surrealist artist Kay Sage (1896-1963) had a "symbolic repertoire" that featured shrouded architectures, but also, most evocatively - eggs. Eggs that seem to go exploring; abandoned or forgotten eggs, eggs that survive in alien places. Please interpret.

During the 1920s - 30s, Women's Magazine had a literary & artistic renaissance. They were illustrated by Golden Era Illustrators like the Polish artist Wladyslaw T. Benda (1873-1948). Benda's "beautiful women" were often at the more exotic & mysterious end of the spectrum.

The etchings of Ken Currie (1960-) from the last decade, delve into the primal chaos of the human animal, with surprising, redemptive poetry.

Only 5 images of the original Concept Art for THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) have been found. Jack Martin Smith (1911-1993) drew 60+ designs for all the sets. MGM rejected them & wanted a more 'ethereal' look, so he did them over again. Over 100 originals may be locked in the MGM vaults

We all know Anthony Gormley for his epic public sculptures of bodies - but he's much less known for his pen and ink paintings. These powerful images capture the body in all its vital, organic, alien strangeness and is from 2009-10. It's called THE BODY.

Forgotten marble bust of a "Veiled Lady' discovered in unlabelled boxes in the basement store of a tiny museum, Cumbria (pic1). The accomplished sculptor is unknown & is possibly from the 18th century when Veiled Lady busts were made popular by R.Monti (pic 2-4). Thank @mono_toy

Painted at age 12-13. Michelangelo's "The Torment of Saint Anthony" (1488) showed precocious talent. Based on a monochrome engraving by 15th-century German artist Martin Schongauer (second image), Michelangelo dramatically altered the image adding landscape, colour & fish scales.

The originator of Art Nouveau, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) considered his masterwork to be the 7 images from his occult examination of The Lord's Prayer (“Pater Noster”or “Le Pater"(1899)) Mucha was obsessed with "Truth that exists Beyond the Visible World". Only 510 copies exist.
