Sleepless hell. Edward Munch was afraid to sleep in a bed & took long train trips at night to cure the insomnia he suffered from for decades. Prolonged insomnia symptoms are: generalised anxiety, paranoia, photophobia & loneliness - many of Munch's paintings depict his symptoms.
The romantic artist Samuel Palmer was nearly erased from history (1805-1881). His early paintings were pawned by his drunken brother & his later works were burned by his son - "The fire...lasted for days". He died largely forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 1950s.
