@GallopingSkirt He's pretty amazing. Glad you like the cut of his jib - now its time for me to look up the etymology of "cut of his jib". here are a few more of Spilliaert's discreet masterpieces.
From insomnia. Léon Spilliaert was a Belgian artist (1881-1946) and insomniac - but his moonlit strolls allowed him to create calming & contemplative art. As one critic said,"(at night) undisturbed by normal life his mind becomes very clear and his thoughts are purer."
The amazing original DUNE concept art by Ron Miller for David Lynch's 1984 film version. One critic referred to the movie as "a Beautiful Sci-fi Disaster", but we love the scale and imagination in the imagery.
For DUNE fans. Here's one of the amazing matte paintings by Albert Whitlock (1915-1999) for David Lynch's version of Dune (1984). Plus a piece of the original concept art for the movie, by Ron Miller (1947-).
Vincent Van Gogh's studies for his first masterpiece - The Potato Eaters (1885). This was painted while Van Gogh lived among peasants in Nuenen in the Netherlands. He wanted to show that they "have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish."
The proto-surrealist - Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901). Swiss Symbolist painter. Böcklin influenced Giorgio de Chirico, who said "Each of Böcklin's works is a shock". He also influenced other Surrealist painters like Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí.
Illustrations from the books of Dostoevsky, by Ilya Glazunov (1930-2017):
Raskolnikov - Crime and Punishment
Prince Myshkin - The Idiot
& two imagined portraits of the author.
The extraordinary painterly photographs of Léonard Misonne (1870 - 1943). A pioneer of 'pictorialism' Misonne was originally a mining engineer who was forced to change career to photography due to asthma. He invented many new printing techniques to create his dreamlike images.
