Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher died #otd in 1819. Nicknamed Marshall Vorwärts, he is best known for liberating Germany from Napoleonic rule in 1813, coming to Wellington's aid at Waterloo in 1815, and taking over Napoleonic Twitter in 2020. Oh, and the elephants. #MarshalBlucher
@ProfDaveAndress @latelordchatham Of course, had #MarshalBlucher actually given birth to an elephant, this is what it would look like.

#Otd in 1812, leaving a rearguard to delay Napoleon, Barclay retreats from Smolensk. Dividing his army into two columns, one of them loses its way and finds itself within earshot of the French. Barclay and Bagration would blame each other for the mess. (Preview of new poster.)

#otd in 1812: The Battle of Saltanovka. Bagration sends Nikolay Raevsky's VII Corps to drive Davout's vanguard out of Mogilev and to open the road to Vitebsk and Barclay's First Army. Raevsky fails to break through but wins Bagration valuable time to retreat to Smolensk.
Today also happens to be the anniversary of the death of the Duke of Reichstadt (Napoleon II) in 1832 at the age of just 21. Check out our new mug based on our baby penguin design.
