I think it works nicely with him being from a poorer circus family. Most of their money would've gone towards nutrition and equipment. So his clothes wouldn't be super nice, but they'd be comfy and worn in.

It also works with him after Bruce takes him in and into adulthood:

Dick Grayson and hoodies. Super sneaky.

Dick Grayson wears Gotham Knights merch:

Duke Thomas IS a new(ish) character, and he isn't even the only black Robin in the DC multiverse.

Love all of these. Not to overthink, but Dick wearing simple stuff and gifted clothes feels very "kid who was raised in the circus, family didn't have a lot of money" and I'm glad to see that affect his style as an adult. https://t.co/PRG774P45Y

Scott McDaniel's last issue on the book until Nightwing Year One is a "team-up" between Nightwing John Law (the original Tarantula, now an old man living in Dick's building). It's presented through an embellished version of events written by John for his publisher, which is cool.

Later writers will have Babs act like Dick was too flirty with other women or something, but that wasn't the case. Helena kissed Dick here without his consent, and Babs shoots a glare at her, not him.

Dixon does this thing where he implies a history between Dick and Babs that just wasn't ever there. He had a crush on her in the 70s when he was in college. She didn't feel the same way due to the age gap. They certainly weren't a thing around the time she was shot.

This is why I don't get why some modern writers act as if DickBabs was full of Dick being a difficult or bad boyfriend, or the relationship was a "war" for Babs, or have her act like he always disappoints her.

That's just now how their relationship was written in the 90s.
