#OnThisDay 1588 the Spanish Armada was spotted off #Plymouth The English Fleet under Lord Howard and Sir Francis Drake, sailed from Plymouth and engaged the Armada the next day starting an epic chase/battle that led to a decisive victory for the English Navy. @HMNBDevonport
#OnThisDay 1801 Cdr Matthew Flinders sailed from @HMNBPortsmouth in HMS INVESTIGATOR charged with the task of circumnavigating Terra Australis. Which he did, naming many inlets, ports and features. He also pushed for the name #Australia to be used to define the land. @RoyalNavy

#OnThisDay 1782 Admiral Sir George Bridges Rodney in HMS FORMIDABLE with Rear Admiral Hood in HMS BARFLEUR and 36 @RoyalNavy ships inflicted a decisive defeat on the French at the Battle of the Saintes in the West Indies. The French suffered over 8000 lost & wounded & 5 ships
