#OnThisDay 1596 legendary sailor Sir Francis Drake died from yellow fever in W. Indies. Famous as a privateer who rose to Vice Admiral and served in the English Fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada, claimed #California for England and circumnavigated the world.@HMNBDevonport
#OnThisDay 1735 the future Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, was born. He had a full and sometimes controversial @RoyalNavy career but is most famous for defeating 27 Spanish ships with his Fleet of 15 off Cape St Vincent. The action resulted in him being made, Earl St Vincent.
#OnThisDay 1780 Admiral Rodney in HMS SANDWICH defeated a Spanish Fleet off Cape St Vincent, Portugal. After the battle he re-supplied the besieged garrisons at Gibraltar and Minorca. The victory at St Vincent owes much to @RoyalNavy ships speed due to having copper sheath hulls.
#OnThisDay 1940 the 5th @HMS_Raleigh is commissioned at Torpoint in Cornwall. RALEIGH is the new entry base for all @RoyalNavy Ratings and is named after the sailor Sir Walter Raleigh, a figurehead from the 4th HMS RALEIGH from 1873 watches over the base from the Quarterdeck
#OnThisDay 1799 Nelson sent a despatch to Earl Howe using the line, ‘I had the happiness to command a Band of Brothers’ referring to the Captains he commanded in his Fleet at the Battle of the Nile and Mediterranean actions. A phrase oft used by Nelson and now famously linked.
