#OnThisDay 1780 Admiral Rodney in HMS SANDWICH defeated a Spanish Fleet off Cape St Vincent, Portugal. After the battle he re-supplied the besieged garrisons at Gibraltar and Minorca. The victory at St Vincent owes much to @RoyalNavy ships speed due to having copper sheath hulls.

#OnThisDay 1816 a combined @royalnavy & @kon_marine Fleet under Admiral Edward Pellew & Vice Adm. Theodorus van Capellen, bombarded the African port of Algiers to enforce the abolition of Christian slavery. The ferocious battle was a success freeing 3000 Christian slaves.

#OnThisDay 1588 the Spanish Armada was spotted off #Plymouth The English Fleet under Lord Howard, Sir Francis Drake & Sir John Hawkins, sailed from Plymouth and engaged the Armada the next day starting an epic chase/battle that led to a decisive victory for the English Navy.

#OnThisDay 1588 Golden Hind sighted the Spanish Armada off Cornwall. The news was relayed to Francis Drake in Plymouth who was reputedly playing bowls and said, 'Don't worry, there's still time to finish the game and still beat the Spanish' Although that was reported 37 yrs later

#OnThisDay 1782 Admiral Sir George Bridges Rodney in HMS FORMIDABLE with Rear Admiral Hood in HMS BARFLEUR and 36 @RoyalNavy ships inflicted a decisive defeat on the French at the Battle of the Saintes in the West Indies. The French suffered over 8000 lost & wounded & 5 ships

and merchant ships entered the Straits of #Gibraltar under the command of Rear Admiral Francis Wheler in HMS SUSSEX. SUSSEX and 12 other ships were sunk in a storm with only 2 survivors. SUSSEX was carrying over £500Million in gold

#OnThisDay 1735 the future Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, was born. He had a full and sometimes controversial @RoyalNavy career but is most famous for defeating 27 Spanish ships with his Fleet of 15 off Cape St Vincent. The action resulted in him being made, Earl St Vincent.
