You know, my plans for The Mermaid’s Quest don’t have Nimue “defined by needing a man,” but I’m sure some people will argue that she is since finding a way for her to be with Arthur is the focus of the story. But she does have a life outside of Arthur.⬇️
Starting to get some ideas for Nimue's love interest, who I've given the working name of Arthur. Yeah, yeah, Arthurian Legend, it's a bit on the nose, but these are just placeholder names. Anyway, Arthur is going to be a very PRETTY man.
All right, so, I realized that my Mermaid character, Nimue, would not go out on her quest unarmed. While a trident is a cliched weapon for a Mermaid, I think it's appropriate, since it's a tool associated with fishing. Harpoons are, too, but they can't disarm a foe-🔽
All right, so, for my protagonist for The Mermaid's Quest, I've given her the working name of Nimue, after the Lady of the Lake in Arthurian Legend. These images & the color palette are some of my primary influences for her design so far. What do you think?
All right, so, here's a few more images that illustrate the concept I'm going for with my Merfolk. The 1st image in particular is relevant, since I want my Merfolk to be able to stand more or less level with a Human while on land. These images aren't perfect, but they're close.
I think part of the reason I want my Merfolk to have long tails is that I simply prefer the aesthetics of a long tail. Yes, I have other reasons, such as them using their tails like whips to fight off attackers, but the graceful curve of a longer tail also really appeals to me.🔽
So, it's a work in progress, but I'm putting together some simple diagrams of Merfolk anatomy as I put together my ideas for The Mermaid's Quest. In terms of proportions, if a Human averages at 8 heads in length, a Merfolk will be 18 heads (if you include the caudal fin.)🔽
So, for The Mermaid's Quest, should the Sea Witch whose offer the Mermaid rejects be a Cecaelia? (That's what Ursula is, by the way, in case you're wondering.) In the OG story, the Sea Witch had the head of an octopus, but that seems a little too much like Cthulhu for me.
Regarding The Mermaid's Quest story I'm putting together, who wants the Mermaid to visit an island on the back of an enormous turtle during one of her treks? Maybe there's a temple w/ an item she needs there, or it's where an exotic fruit grows. Maybe both. Thoughts?
So, my planning of The Mermaid's Quest has led me to conclude that it will be a 5 act story w/ this basic structure:
Act 1: Establishing the characters & the quest
Act 2: 1st Expedition - "Tutorial Mode"
Act 3: 2nd Expedition
Act 4: 3rd Expedition
Act 5: Resolution
