Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Johannes Vermeer.

A painting everyone knows. Strictly speaking it is not a portrait but a genre piece, known as a tronie (a 'type'), in portrait form. Tronies were particularly popular in Dutch/ Flemish art in the 17th century.

Claude-Joseph Vernet.

Vernet was primarily a landscape and marine painter, concentrating on atmospheric effects and the contemporary taste for the exotic. Many of his paintings feature very well rendered human figures.

Selling Fish.
George Morland.

Morland was the great chronicler of rural life in the 18th century. Unfortunately he was also his own worst enemy, and drink, debauchery and a spell in debtor's prison did for him in the end. Many of his paintings were engraved.

Perhaps she is this lady. 'The Young Girls, by Marie Laurencin'. One of the few female cubists.

Painting at Bedtime.
The Souvenir.
Jean-Honore Fragonard.

Fragonard was one of the greatest exponents of the exuberant Rococo style, lots of flourishes and decoration, and often hidden eroticism. This is a fairly subdued piece but the lady is probably carving her lover's name.

Noli Me Tangere.
Rembrandt.

According to the Bible the first person the resurrected Jesus spoke to was Mary Magdalene. He said 'Noli me Tangere' ('Do not touch me', or possibly 'Do not cling to me'). Thus Mary was the first witness to the resurrection.

The Terrace.
Milly Childers.

Milly Childers was a painter of the late Victorian and early twentieth century. She's not quite as well known now. Her father was an MP and Cabinet minister and this is her painting of the House of Commons terrace.
