This is Rembrandt's only seascape, and shows Christ calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, as described in the Gospel of Mark. The painting was stolen from a gallery in Boston in 1990 and has yet to be recovered.

I saw this place on TV the other day and it reminded me of this painting, which I think I've shown before, but it is so spectacular I'm showing it again. Stanfield was a celebrated painter of marine scenes.

Henri was a founder member of the Ashcan school of Urban Realism in the USA and one of 'The Eight'. Willie Gee was a newspaper boy and Eva Green the daughter of the janitor of the building he lived in.

de Morgan's allegorical and spiritual image of 'luna' represents the human soul, bound to earth during life, in the same way the Moon is gravitationally bound, but able to soar to the heavens after death. Lovely subtle colours.

This has been much imitated by people in photographs in the last few days. The painting is a particular type, peculiar to the Netherlands and a few other places, called a 'tronie', an exotic 'type'. An iconic one.

One of two paintings he made of this subject. It shows the exact moment the two disciples realise their companion of the day was Jesus himself. But look at the servant, he has no idea who Jesus is but is now aware he is special.

This is 16th century Venetian artist Tintoretto's magnificent narrative painting of the Crucifixion and some of the events leading up to it. His handling of perspective, figures, colours and the narrative itself are all accomplished.

By tradition, Wednesday is when Judas received his thirty pieces of silver. This painting is a fresco, part of a cycle in the Church of San Gimignano, in Siena. Memmi was a 14th century Sienese master.
