van Beveren was born in Belgium but mainly lived and worked in Amsterdam in the first half of the 19th century. He is not very well known outside of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and he died aged only 41.

von Uhde is one of the most influential German artists painting in the Impressionist style, although he is not as well known outside Germany as he might be. He painted mainly genre and religious pieces.

Homer is one of the most celebrated American artists and printmakers. He painted many subjects, in both oil and watercolour, often of Marine subjects, and had stints in France and England.

Watteau was a French painter in the Baroque and Rococo styles. The less formal and theatrical Rococo was perfect for Watteau's invention of the fete galante or courtship party featuring colourful country settings.

From Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', the story of the nymph Echo and Narcissus is well known. She was in love with him but he was only in love with his own reflection. She faded to an echo and he turned into a flower.

Demuth was an American painter, from Lancaster, Pa, mainly in watercolours. He painted in a style known as Precisionism, a modernist method which owes much to Cubism. He often painted dancers, jazz singers and Vaudeville.

Walden was an American artist who trained in the US and then France and painted in France, Cornwall and Wales, and often in Hawaii, where he painted mainly seascapes. His work is in many museums in France and Hawaii.
