In the earlier Ganbare Goemon games, falling into water means instant death for Goemon or Ebisumaru. There is probably a joke there about drowning, but Goemon hardly goes in the water throughout the series.

Goemon, Ebisumaru, Sasuke, and Yae get all the attention, but minor and enemy characters in the games are full of charm as well. So much detail, too.

You take it for granted the more you play Goemon games, but the pixel art in the series is truly amazing.

Goemon’s name is in the title, but Ebisumaru is my favorite character in the Ganbare Goemon series. A truly original creation, and the series would be completely different without him.

Being a historical/mythical figure, there have been a lot of interpretations of Ishikawa Goemon over the years. Some are more… interesting than others.

For better or for worse, in many ways 3D, being more familiar, is more boring. And I guess that’s the appeal of 2D. Ukiyo woodblock prints are striking because they are 2D, and the “floating world” aesthetic would be lost in an attempt to make them 3D.
@sir_mihael One more interesting thing is that you can see a similar change happening with Goemon Impact’s hair design as well. His hair color was black with blue highlights in the beginning, and gradually became more and more blue.
Happy 35th anniversary to the MSX2 port of Karakuri Dochu. There’s a lot of like about this port, but somehow it didn’t quite capture the feel of the Famicom original. There’s something evocative about the rice fields and the lords’ residences, I guess.
