At Lempertz today: The Holy Trinity by Maarten van Heemskerck. As if there can be any doubt about authorship, there is an engraving by Jacob Matham (1602) which mentions “M. Heemskerck pinxit”. 1/2

Drawing after Dirck Barentsz coming up for auction. A meare 150 euros estimate. The original is in the Rijksmuseum. Dirck obviously had problems with the foreshortening of Christ's head which he messed up totally. Interesting that the copyist copied the mess.

The Amsterdam Museum has the most comprehensive Luyken collection in the world, thanks to the Van Eeghen bequest to the city of 1907. The six drawings bear the Van Eeghen collectors mark, it's good news that they are now reunited with the collection.

All are Mennonite martyrs, executed prior to the Reformation. Here the execution of Anneken Heyndriks - she was burned at te stake - on Dam Square in Amsterdam in 1571
