She died in 1665, aged just 27 with stomach pains. Her biographer & contemporaries believed she was poisoned. However nearly every famous person who died suddenly at the time was considered to have been poisoned by ‘enemies’. Portrait of Anna Maria Ranuzzi as Charity (1665)
In looking at her work we can see the prototypes of Reni in profiles - however unlike the master she imbues her subjects with warm, serene & attractive personalities. Head of the Archangel Gabriel & of the Virgin (1638-65) & Portrait of a Lady (1638-65)
By May 1890 Vincent moved to N France to Auvers-Sur-Oise, under the care of Dr Gachet. Two of his last landscapes are the ominous Wheatfield under Thunder Clouds & Wheatfield with Crows. They echo his mental state & struggle (he said they represented his sadness & loneliness)
