Overall I’ve priced the drawings so they are affordable to everyone. Each is just €149/£135/$177. I believe everyone should have access to original artwork in their homes.

As a Jew, when the Nazis occupied Paris, he had to flee. He hid in forests & had to sleep in the open. He became dangerously ill & had to return to Paris for an operation, which failed. He died in 1943. Le Petit Pâtissier (1920s), Choirboy (1927-8), Madeleine Castaing (c1929)

He loved Rembrandt & studied his beef pictures. These are paintings of animal flesh. Soutine took Rembrandt’s idea & liberated the concept further. In painting flesh he asks what is life. Mutton (c1920), Portrait of a Young Girl (c1920), Self-Portrait (c1920-1) & the Beef (c1920)

When he painted he saw sitters as themselves & peeled away his own preconceptions of them. He was following the path of Rembrandt’s. Village Idiot, Woman in Green, Woman Seated in an Armchair & Woman with a Tall Hat (all c1919)

The passion he had for painting was, to him, like a madness & so he sought out others with diverse realities. Moïse Kipling (c1919-20), Peasant Boy (c1919-20), the Mad Woman (c1919)

Deceptively naive painting highlights his concern with existentialism & experience. His was a highly intelligent & intuitive art. Maison de Clamart (c1919), Self-Portrait (c1919), the Hare (c1919) & White House (c1918)

His landscapes writhe with emotion & energy. To absorb yourself into one Is to feel the experience of how that landscape is encountered. House in the Woods (c1918), Houses by the Sea (c1918), La Route Peu Rassurante (c1918-8) & Landscape with a Donkey (c1918)

I love his self-portraits. It’s as if he is carving himself out of the paint. Self-portraits (c1917), Herrings & a Bottle of Chianti (c1917) & Flowers on a Chair (c1917)

After the war Paul Guillaume became his dealer & promoted him. Portraits (1915-6). Soutine was keen to expose the emotion of his sitters & capture their personalities. Soutine recognised that with the invention of the camera Realism was irrelevant - just expression.
