The Prisoner (1787-90), Vesuvius (c1788), Sir Richard Arkwright (1789-90) & Arkwright’s Cotton Mills (1790s). Wright moved in the same circles as Arkwright. It was Arkwright who championed the factory system & the Spinning Frame & laid the foundations of mass-production

His double-portrait of the Gisbornes is a sophisticated essay in greens, an early depiction of a brolly & an authentic image of middle-aged love. Dovedale by Moonlight (1785), Penelope unraveling her Web (1785), the Lady In Melton’s Comus (1785) & Thomas & Mary Gisborne (1786)

His portraits set out not to flatter but to record. They investigate with a keen eye & give us a sense of the generation who would change the world. Erasmus Darwin (1782-3), Self-Portrait (1782-5), The Corinthian Maid (1782-5) & A Cottage on Fire At Night (1785-93)

No other English artist approached painting with such a focus on truth & voracious curiosity. Maria (1781), The Rev Cooke, his wife & Daniel Cooke (1781-2), Arkwright’s Cotton Mills (1782-3) & Benjamin Franklin (1782)

His volcano images are some of the most sublime in English art. They show he was aware of Italian work in this genre. The Annual Girandola at the Castle of St Angelo, Rome (1776), Vesuvius (1776-80), Edwin (1777-8) & Maria (1777)

Wright is wonderful in painting the newest science as well as the antique & was one of the most curiosity driven artists. Mr & Mrs Coltman (1771), Miravan breaking open the Tomb of his Ancestors (1772), Self-Portrait (1772-3) & the Earthstopper on the Banks of the Derwent (1773)

Two Girls Dressing a Kitten (1768-70), A Philosopher by Lamplight (1769) & An Academy by Lamplight (1769). The latter is a classic Grand Tour Painting when aristocrats travelled to Italy to experience culture & study the Roman & Greek artefacts that had been unearthed.
