Initially he painted in the Neoclassical style. He exhibited at the RA from 1874-1916. His aesthetically pleasing work & romantic approach met with great success. After the Dance (1876), Sick Child (1877) & Remorse of Nero (1878)

Born in Rome to English painter parents he enrolled in the RA (1871)& exhibited at their annual shows. His interest was in Arthurian & Classical mythology. Undine (1872), Gone but Not Forgotten (1873) & The Unwelcome Companion (1873)

In looking at his images there is a sense of the artist forcing images into life with superhuman effort. Self-Portrait with Chicken & Rooster (1924), Still Life with Cat & Onions (1928), Portrait of Patrick Edwards (1928) & Boy at Harvest Time (1923)

It was just as well that he left Russia when he did. One cannot imagine the USSR approving of his Russian Faces or his individuality. Faces of Russia (c1923), The Twins (1922-3), The Harlot of Marseille (1923) & German Butcher (1938)

His style was fairly constant yet his charismatic portraits grab at the viewer & demand attention. Sergei Esenin as a Youth (c1923), The Model (c1926), Woman Reading (c1922) & Lev Shestov (1922)

He organised a leaderless group called the Society of Young Artists in 1919. Peasants in the Field (1920), Sunflowers (1917-9), Village (1918) & Feodor Chaliapin (1918). The final image subverts the centuries old female nude pose as favoured by Titian & Goya.

His portraits are striking. I particularly love the way he excavates the psyche of the older men he liked to paint. Lady in Black (1917), Thief & Prostitute (1917), Dushka (1917) & Peasant (1917-8)
