The painter’s mature style showed his evolving genius. The images become more imposing & have even greater spirit (Count Guriev, 1821 & Ms Leblanc, 1823). His painting relied heavily on careful study & observation - studies for a martyrdom (1824-34)
He set out to create a body of historical work & created strange & cold works as he attempted to interpret the Ancient Greek form of painting. Virgil (1812-4) is almost marble like, Ossian (1813) is bleached & Don Pedro (1814) is doll-like.

Despite the modernity of Corinth’s work he was a keen student of art history & on a trip to Holland to view Old Masters he died from pneumonia in 1925. Main pic is Ecce Homo (1925), a self-portrait (1925) & a view of Walchensee (1924)
1911 had been a turning point for the artist as he suffered a stroke. This forced him to reconsider his outlook on life & led to an even greater openness to experimentation & some of his greatest works including a still life (1917), Cain (1917) & Walchensee (1920)
