Highly respected & well-known #Saltaire resident, Nick Baggio, has died. In 1981 fluent Italian-speaker Nick was one of the first Blue Badge Guides for #Bradford. A bereavement counsellor, he raised his children after their mother Susan Fassbender’s death in 1991. A wonderful man
#Saltaire #LivingAdventCalendar at 5 Ada St. In 1880, Sarah Drake was left a widow with 4 children aged 1 to 12 when her husband (37) died. Martha the eldest was a spinner in Salts Mill & Sarah worked as a charwoman to put Christmas dinner on the table.
Merry Christmas to all!
#Saltaire #LivingAdventCalendar at 74 Victoria Rd. In 1881 it was home to Hannah Fell a widow & her 9 children and all but Harry (6) were toiling for #TitusSalt. There was however plenty on the table on #XmasDay
Barely a month after the 1901 burglary at #MilnerField Mansion a seldom recalled tragedy struck. #TitusSalt Jnr’s widow hosted the Bradford Postmen’s Water Polo match in the lake, watched by 300. How nobody, not even his wife, saw 26 yr old Tom Mirfield drowning remains a mystery https://t.co/fMgG8NbSvQ
Annie’s sister Nell moved to #Bingley & worked in a shop. An organiser of the local Women’s Social & Political Union, she was arrested at the #HouseOfCommons & jailed for 2 weeks in 1907. With 2 of the Pankhursts, she spoke to 100,00 at the 1907 #ShipleyGlen suffragettes meeting https://t.co/hiTn7pRL7v
“Too timid to read to the congregation..” the young #TitusSalt was the librarian of the Horton Lane Congregational Chapel #SundaySchool. The Horton Lane church was demolished, the Sunday school survives.

Opened #OTD 1914, the Alhambra #Bradford was built on the site of Rands Mill, which was next door to #TitusSalt’s family home. Former #Saltaire pupil Marie Studholme, gaiety girl & Music Hall star, was mobbed at the opening of the theatre in her home town.
Ann Walker’s death #OTD 1854 was bad news for #TitusSalt her tenant in Crow Nest Lightcliffe. Busy with his mill at #Saltaire not a year old, the Salts had to leave the home they loved. In 1867 Titus grabbed the mansion at a bargain price when it failed to sell at auction. #Pass https://t.co/z9BB8xZt43
