There are a lot of other children on the beach as well as mothers and fathers and babies and grannies and people paddling, and dogs who dash in and out of the water barking excitedly at seagulls.

They go to the seaside in the train. Tom keeps asking when they are going to get to the sea. Lucy wears her armbands in the train so as to be all ready to swim when they get there.

One hot day Lucy and Tom and their Mum and Dad thought they would go to the seaside. Lucy is helping to pack up the picnic. There are sandwiches and hard-boiled eggs, apples, biscuits and a bottle of orange squash. There is also a lovely chocolate cake.
This week we’re turning to Lucy & Tom at the Seaside, which was first published in 1976.
Min wouldn’t hold anyones hand but Alfie’s. She went on crying. Then Alfie made a brave decision. He ran and put down his blanket, very carefully, in a safe place underneath the table.

Min wanted to sit next to Alfie. She stopped crying and pulled her chair right up close to his.
Bernard blew into his lemonade through his straw. He blew into his jelly too, until his Mum took it away from him. 1/2
Alfie was very excited about Bernard’s party. When the day came Mum washed Alfie’s face and brushed his hair.
‘You won’t want your old blanket at the party,’ said Mum. But Alfie wouldn’t leave his blanket behind.

One day Alfie came home from Nursery School with a card in an envelope. His best friend, Bernard, had given it to him. Mum said it was an invitation to Bernard’s birthday tea party.
