‘Now we’re real explorers’ said Mum. The stream was shallow. Alfie and Mum took off their shoes and waded in.

They sat there without talking for quite a long while until it was time to go home. And neither Alfie nor Mum ever forgot that time and that place.

They climbed up steep mountain paths beside rushing waterfalls, hanging on to the rocky sides in case they fell in. And when they reached the top they pitched a tent and ate their supplies.

The lane outside Grandma’s gate had a stream running down the middle of it and plenty of mud. They held hands and slithered along together. It was fun at first, sloshing about. But soon Annie Rose’s boots were full of water.

Lenny came to where the garden met the back drive. As he turned the bend he saw a figure coming towards the house from the opposite direction. A smallish person in a brown coat. A familiar walk.

‘Mum, oh Mum!’ he shouted.

That night long after the others had gone to sleep Lenny lay awake listening to the night noises outside. Far away in the dark he thought he heard a growling purring sound, then a shriek of an animal in pain.

Lenny woke very early while the girls were still asleep. He got out of bed, pattered over to the windows and pulled the blackout curtain aside. His mouth fell open.

So this was the country! He had never seen anything like it.
