More from My First ABC with a reminder of the fun of dressing up boxes.
When Grandpa and I put on our coats and went to the park…
We saw one black cat sitting on a wall…
From the Nursery Collection
This week we have been looking at Burning the Tree, one of the stories in Stories by Firelight. The collection also includes Sea Singing, Shirley’s selkie story, which this illustration is from. Whilst the book is out of print second hand copies are currently readily available.
‘Let’s have one more good blaze before bedtime,’ said Grandpa as William joined him. And then he opened the box and flung all the papers and letters and things that were inside on to the bonfire.

It was nearly dark when they went outside, with only a streak of red left in the sky.
They stood and looked at the fire for a long time. They watched until at last the tree burned out and collapsed into the pits and caves of ash.

Grandpa had not been living at William’s house for very long, only since Gran had died. William spent a lot of time in grandpa’s room. Sometimes they watched television and sometimes they just chatted. There was a special box with brass handles, full of some old boring letters.
This week we’ll be looking at Burning the Tree from the Stories by Firelight collection.
William and Grandpa were taking down the tree. Christmas was over and it was time to put all the decorations away in the loft until next year.
Then all the people in the audience smiled and clapped a special clap for Mae for being so brave and not spoiling the play.
Dad said he had a big surprise for them, they had a new baby sister.
Mae was pleased that Mum would be home in time for Christmas.
Then she saw somebody coming in late at the back of the room. It was Dad!
Mae was so pleased to see him she forgot she was in a play. She waved and shouted out, ‘Hello, Dad. I’m being the Angel Gave-you!’
