Pidgeotto is a LOT more interesting with its weird feather crest and predatory habits. It’s equal parts passerine and falcon and I think that’s really neat. It’s also got a great balance of cool factor and believability as a speculative animal. 8/10

Pokémon Reviews: Pidgey to Raticate

Pidgey is the first in a long-running tradition of early game Flying-type Pokemon that are basically just regular birds. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s a competently designed little critter, but it’s pretty unexciting. 5/10

These powerful browsers are solitary and exhibit strong sexual dimorphism, with females averaging 270kg and the males routinely reaching weights of 600kg or more. The cacophonous sound of male breeding competition is a signature sound of eastern North America's springtime. 4/5

2023’s Shocking New Take on Dunkleosteus:

And finally, Beedrill! I think we’ve all gotten too comfortable with Beedrill as a design. Really look at it and appreciate how weird it is! Mouthless, slightly anthropomorphic, strange little insectoid shoe feet, and DRILLS FOR HANDS. What the heck. It’s gnarly! 8.5/10

Kakuna, much like Metapod, does an excellent job representing a pupal hymenopteran. Yellow Jackets at this stage of development freaked me out as a kid so I used to dislike Kakuna, but I’ve long since gotten over any zoological phobias. Very cool, and surprisingly menacing! 8/10

WEEDLE!!! Everything about Weedle makes me happy. I love the little doe eyes, the goofy clown nose, and the fact that it wants nothing more than to jab you with a poisonous spur and kill you with its home-grown chemical cocktail. Just as good as Caterpie in a sillier way. 9/10

There’s a lot I like about Butterfree but on the whole I find it a little disappointing. I know I was just talking about how Pokémon shouldn’t just be “animal+element” but Butterfree would benefit from being a little more insectoid. Not enough Bug Pokémon are truly buggy! 6.5/10

Metapod is hilarious. There’s so many ways you could make a character from a chrysalis but for the very first chrysalis Pokémon they literally just slapped some dopey eyes on it and called it a day. Absolutely no complaints, but not as cute as Caterpie. 8.5/10
