Sandshrew, which is more of a pangolin than a shrew, is a fantastic Pokémon. It’s another example of that early Pokémon trend of taking real animals as inspiration without copying them outright. Pangolin monster, not monster pangolin. Utterly adorable too! 8.5/10

Poor Raichu, beloved by few and overshadowed by its own predecessor to such a degree that I bet a lot of younger, casual fans might not even know it exists. It’s a decent design for what it is, taking Pikachu’s traits and ramping them up a bit. Not really for me, but fine! 5/10

Pokémon Reviews: Pikachu to Sandslash

I think it’s essentially impossible to dislike Pikachu. It’s not my favourite Pokémon or one I particularly like but Pikachu has a perfect design for a series mascot. Easy to draw, simple but recognizable, a great all-around Pokémon! 6/10.

Arbok is another one of those Pokémon that’s ALMOST a real animal but isn’t quite right. The almost dinosaurian teeth and weirdly chunky proportions make it stand out more than it would if it were literally just a cobra and I prefer it that way. 7.5/10

Ekans has one of the cutest expressions of any Pokémon. It’s like it’s trying it’s hardest to be scary but nobody is buying it at all. It’s a good little snake, but maybe a little too simple for my tastes. 6/10

I’ve always loved Fearow. It’s like a weird scuzzy crane thing. It’s remarkably similar to how I’ve always envisioned the Stymphalian birds! I love the visual of it striking out at Rattata or some other little Pokémon like a grounded stork. Solid 8/10.

Pokémon Reviews: Spearow to Arbok!

Spearow is definitely an improvement over Pidgey with its more differentiated colour palette and weird scaly belly. It’s more of a bird monster than just a bird and I prefer that for a Pokémon. The feet are neat too! 7/10

Raticate loses a little for the more conventional colour scheme but makes up for it in being extremely scary. This is a Pokémon that would absolutely gnaw your limbs off if given the chance. It’s also a nutria as much as it is a rat and I think that’s really neat. Another 8/10!

Rattata might just be a purple rat but how great is it that a monster can literally just be a big angry purple rat? Rattata has such a defined personality and is absurdly adorable, one of the Pokémon I’d most want to have if they were real. Solid 8/10.

Pidgeot, on the other hand, is pretty much just Pidgeotto but bigger. And with longer wings. It’s fine but I don’t find it especially exciting. I prefer Pidgeotto’s three toed feet over the more conventional four toed arrangement of Pidgeot. 5/10, just average.
