Vulpix is a Pokémon that I want to love but just can't. It's a good design that isn't overtly "animal+element" but I have a hard time taking it seriously with the cutesy curly hair and weird anime girl mouth. Not the best fox Pokémon but good! 5.5/10.

Clefable is an improvement but I'm still not super into it. The anatomy feels more sensible and the weird wing things add something to an otherwise simple shape. The face still bugs me but I at least see what they were going for this time. 5/10.

Pokémon Reviews: Clefairy to Ninetales

I don't know if this is a controversial opinion or not but I don't like Clefairy at all. Something about the flat face, weird little feet, and the fleshy bubble-gum colours just don't work. I don't get it! Cute, but not for me. 3/10.

Nidoking is a real contender for the most badass Pokémon. It's pretty much just Baragon but purple, which is the best colour, and is made up of a bunch of neat angular but organic shapes. The only thing I'd change is making the hand claws bigger, they're just too stubby! 9.5/10

A little beefier, a little uglier, and a bit more traditionally "monstrous" than Nidoran! Nidorino is a classic that surely can't be lower than a 5/10 on anyone's personal scale. That being said, it's a slight downgrade design-wise. 8/10

Male Nidoran is better in every way than the female, especially thanks to that fantastic shade of purple! The spines are arranged in a nicer, more organic way and the oversized ears are absolutely precious. I always fit one on my team, no exceptions. 9/10

Nidoqueen is a solid, if unremarkable, Pokémon. The shape itself is as generic as you can be within the kaiju/dinosaur aesthetic but the big ears and silly underwear patterning are super endearing. It's not as good as Nidoking but it's still awesome. 8/10

Nidorina is more interesting and ramps up the saurian qualities so it's more of a chunky little dinosaur with big ears. This sort of kaiju/dinosaur creature was so common in the first generation and I miss it! The cotton candy blue colour of these Pokémon makes me hungry. 7.5/10

Pokémon Reviews: The Nidos

I think it goes without saying that the Nido line is one of the coolest in the entire series. Female Nidoran is my least favourite of the bunch with its fairly plain appearance but it's still a cool little spiny reptilian lagomorph. 7/10

Sandslash is pretty great too! I miss the almost brick-like armour but the overlapping plates are a neat look that doesn’t have any equivalent elsewhere in the series. I like to think it uses the big claws when foraging to tear into old tree trunks to expose termites! 8/10
