To finish out my process, I do a polish pass that involves fine tuning the colors and lighting and adding in the final details.

I had a lot of fun painting this piece on my Twitch stream! Which character would you like to see me make a fan art of next?

My second render pass is when I begin refining details and fine tuning anatomy. In this stage I take the colored base and look to finalize the placement and anatomy of each element in the piece.

My first render pass is all about getting color on the page. I approximate lighting during this time, but mostly I just want to transfer the piece to painting so I have a base to build off of in the next stages.

I add the majority of the textures and details in this last step. I finalize the frog render, and add the fish scales, hair, flowers, and final highlights.

In the 5th step, I look to finalize the background and face and fine tune her anatomy. I also work to find my final background colors in this step.

Happy MerMay! I was so excited to make a mermaid this year for the summer season! For this character I wanted to make a pond guardian that oversees the local wildlife, and was inspired by koi fish and frogs when designing her. Stay tuned for the process breakdown later this week!
