St. James the Greater, Apostle (44)
The first of the Apostles to suffer martyrdom, and the only one whose death is mentioned in Holy Scripture. He was beheaded by Herod Agrippa. He was one of the intimate friends of Our Lord. He preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, and Spain.
St. Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal (1271-1336)
Married to King Dinis, an unfaithful husband, provided her an occasion to practice patience. Despite the corrupt court life, she maintained devout habits, helped the sick and the poor. She established orphanages and founded a convent.

St. Vitus (303)
He was as a child who had the happiness to be instructed in the Faith by his Christian nurse, Crescentia, and Modestus, his preceptor. The boy received the gift of miracles and was accused of being a magician. All three were captured, tortured, and put to death.

St. Rita of Cascia
After the death of her husband and twin sons, she joined the Augustinian nuns. One night, a light came from the crucifix wounding her forehead, as if a thorn from Christ's crown had pierced her. It remained there for the rest of her life. She died in 1456.
St. Dympna, Martyr
The daughter of an Irish king. After her mother's death her father conceived the thought of marrying his own daughter. She was horrified and reproved her father. She was beheaded by order of her father for being a Christian and preserving her virginity.
