Wednesday 13th April - 'Odol' (1925) by Stuart Davis. Almost 40 years before Warhol's Brillo Box and Campbell's soup cans the American Modernist painter Stuart Davis drew inspiration from the worlds of advertising and mass production.

Wednesday 6th April - Langston Hughes (1901-1967) was a poet, playwright and social activist. One of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance he pioneered jazz poetry in his debut collection 'The Weary Blues'. This portrait is by the German-American artist Winold Reiss.

Monday 14th March - Morning! This week we are with Claude Monet in Venice. The artist travelled there with his wife in early October 1908 and remained in the city for 10 weeks. It was the last painting tour of his career.

Wednesday Mar 2nd - The Doni Tondo, or Doni Madonna (c.1507). Thought to have been commissioned to commemorate the marriage of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi it’s Michelangelo’s only finished panel painting.

Thursday Feb 24th - The Banjo Lesson (1893) by Henry Ossawa Tanner. Based on Tanner's illustration for a short story by Ruth McEnery Stuart this was painted after the artist emigrated to France, and was the first of his paintings accepted by the Paris Salon.

Friday Feb 18th - 'Metropolis' (1917) by George Grosz. His hellish vision of Berlin was painted in the middle of the Great War, and was later exhibited in the 1937 exhibition of 'Degenerate Art', four years after Grosz, an outspoken critic of the Nazis, emigrated to the US.
