'The Tragedy' (1903), Pablo Picasso. Early in his career, Picasso's paintings went through we now refer to as his "Blue Period". These were often images of life on the fringes of society.

Another lady in blue, Auguste Renoir’s La Parisienne. Painted in 1874 it featured in the first exhibition of Impressionist art the same year. Reactions were mixed, but it’s now one of the stars of the collection bequeathed to the National Museum, Cardiff, by Gwendoline Davies.

From the same book, a c15th choir stall carving depicting the devil straddling an elephant faced pig monster which has its tail wrapped around a man’s throat. Medieval times were wild.

An enormous goblet (c.1460) once belonging to Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. The original is in Museum St Peter an de Stadt, Wiener Neustadt, the painting by Bela Schäffer in the Royal Collection, and the illustration is from this book that I’m looking at right now.

Leonardo used oils and a thick undercoat of wax which caused the colours to run, and both frescoes were ultimately abandoned. The closest approximation we have to Leonardo’s painting is Rubens’ drawing, based on an earlier engraving that may have used the cartoon as its source.

Studies for soldiers (1503) by Leonardo da Vinci. These were preparatory drawings for a planned fresco in Florence’s Palazzo Della Signoria depicting the Battle of Anghiari. The facing wall would feature a Michelangelo fresco of the Battle of Cascina.
