Venus was the #Roman goddess of love, beauty and desire. She was the mother of the Roman people through her son, Aeneas, who survived the fall of Troy & fled to Italy & Julius Caesar claimed her as his ancestor. She has lived on into the modern world as a symbol of love & beauty
The 22nd or 24th January AD41 was a day of #Roman drama - The Emperor Caligula was stabbed to death in the cryptoporticus beneath the imperial palaces. He was 28 and had reigned for 3 years & 10 months. Members of the Praetorian Guard led by Cassius Chaerea murdered the emperor.
Neptune was the #Roman god of freshwater, the sea and also horses - he was also associated with Earthquakes. He was regarded as the brother of Jupiter and Pluto & Salacia, goddess of saltwater was his wife. He had only one temple in Rome, which stood near the Circus Flaminus.

This #Roman mosaic shows the birth of Mithras. He is emerging from a dark cave, flanked by his 2 attendants, Cautes & Cautopates. Above him is the raven, associated with initiation into his cult. Now in the @walters_museum collection it dates to the 1st Century AD
Today we say happy Birthday to the country of #SanMarino which by tradition was founded on 3rd September AD301, when Saint Marinus, escaping the #Roman Diocletian Persecution, fled to Monte Titano, where he built a small church, establishing the city & state of San Marino.
