The battle of Actium took place on 2nd September 31BC, when the forces of the #Roman Octavian (later the Emperor Augustus) defeated those of Mark Antony & Cleopatra. This naval battle, in which Marcus Agrippa commanded Octavian's fleet, took place off the coast of Greece.
Happy Neptunalia - This two day #Roman Festival commenced on 23rd July in honour of Neptune as God of the waters. People would build huts out of branches and foliage, in the shade of which they picnicked, drank spring water and wine to keep cool and camped out overnight
22nd July was the anniversary of the Temple of Concordia in Ancient #Rome. What was left of the temple was pulled down circa 1450, and the stone turned into a lime kiln to recover the marble for building. #Concordia was the goddess who embodied agreement in marriage & society
The marriage of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna was a happy one and it was reported that he much valued her views and advice on politics. They had two sons soon after their marriage - Lucius Septimius Bassianus (Caracalla) in AD188 & Publius Septimius Geta in AD189.
The Battle of Pydna took place on 22nd June 168BC where Paullus defeated the Macedonian King Perseus, ending the 3rd Macedonian war. #Macedonia was divided into 4 client republics of the #Roman Empire. The painting is Perseus Surrenders to Paullus by Jean-François Peyron

A #Roman General of importance to #Trimontium & #Britain was born on 13th June AD40. Happy Birthday Gnaeus Julius Agricola, Roman Governor of Britannia & founder of Trimontium in the #ScottishBorders. He was born in Gallia Narbonensis (France). The water pipe is from Chester
#Fridayfeast today is a real royal treat. A desert very like modern slush or sorbet was eaten by Emperor Nero AD 37-68. He had snow and ice brought from the mountains and flavoured with fruits and berries. No-one but the wealthiest #roman could afford this decadent treat.
